Welcome
Christian Indies has had many face lifts in the past 10 years. We were a concert promotion ministry, a magazine, a radio show, a radio station, a directory of artists. Now we are a news clearing house. As we get all of our ducks in a row you will see changes here.

We will be offering a weekly Webcast with an Artists/Band feature and industry news. Each month we will be offering an eZine that covers all of what we did on the webcast along with other news that we couldn't fit into the webcast.

Check Back Often. Get Involved.

, President of , along with , Chairman Emeritus of , , President and CEO of the , and Reverend , Civil Rights Icon and President Emeritus of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, released an open letter Friday embracing ’s position on equality for gay and lesbian individuals in this country.

This followed several calls today between faith and civil rights leaders organized by Rev. Al Sharpton and NAN to encourage a civil debate on this issue and to encourage all individuals to keep all issues of import to our communities in mind in the days ahead.

______________

May 11, 2012

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”  As leaders in today’s Civil Rights Movement, we stand behind the President Obama’s belief that same sex couples should be allowed to join in civil marriages.  We also affirm that individuals may hold different views on this issue but still work together towards our common goals: fair housing and equitable education, affordable health care and eradicating poverty, all issues of deep and abiding concern for our communities.

President Obama stated his view that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry.  This is a view that we concur with, because as civil rights leaders we cannot fight to gain rights for some and not for all.  At the same time, we acknowledge that the President stated his personal opinion, which everyone is entitled to – both those who agree with him, like us, and those who disagree.  The President made clear that his support is for civil marriage for same-sex couples, and he is fully committed to protecting the ability of religious institutions to make their own decisions about their own sacraments.

There will be those who seek to use this issue to divide our community. As a people, we cannot afford such division.  It is our hope that conversations on strengthening African American families continue in a civil and respectful way, on all sides, both with those who support the ability of same-sex couples to marry, and those who do not.

We are glad that President Obama has joined Dr. Joseph Lowery, and so many others in full embrace of equality for gay and lesbian individuals in our country.  We also welcome the civil debate on this issue that will surely spring.  And we encourage all individuals to keep all issues of import to our communities in mind in the days ahead, and we seek to secure equal justice, opportunity and dignity for all God’s children.

Reverend Al Sharpton
President & Founder, National Action Network

Julian Bond
Chairman Emeritus of NAACP

Melanie Campbell
Melanie Campbell, President and CEO of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation

Monday Morning Memo: How Many Gods Are There?  As you know from last week’s post, I ’fessed up to the pleasure of reading and enjoying ... Read More

As you know from last week’s post, I ’fessed up to the pleasure of reading and enjoying blogs from various and sundry members of God’s family. Yes, I love them all. Some might think it distracting, getting me off track. Others might think I can’t possibly be giving God the attention He deserves if I’m willing to listen to so many voices. Is that possible? Well, maybe, if I paid more attention to them than to Him, or if I took their word over His Word to guide my life, or if I allowed their truth to be louder than The Truth Himself.

Then there’s the question of His voice sounding the same no matter the channel through which it comes. Hmm. Tough one. Or that His message isn’t pure enough to stand up to the seemingly inevitable dilution that occurs when flowing through a variety of vessels. Does that happen to water? Whether it’s in a tea cup, a plastic tumbler, or a glass bowl, it’s still water. No matter what the vessel appears to be, the precious liquid inside is still the same.

But what of the many different denominations and their claims to have a handle on “the” message, and no one else seems to get it right? Okay. That’s viable. If someone says, “Our way is right and everyone else is wrong,” run — don’t walk — to the nearest exit.

Got it. And yet, Margret, you’ve not addressed the differences. Doesn’t that mean God is not the same? That he’s incomplete, fragmented? Well, let’s think about that in light of Scripture. Jesus had disciples who were paper pushers (Matthew and Zaccheus: tax collectors), and independent businessmen (Peter, Andrew, James, and John: fishermen). The wife of the man who managed Herod’s household helped underwrite His ministry, as did a few other well-to-do women (Joanna, Susanna, and Mary Magdalene). And let’s not forget those who lavished him with wonderful, but unusual gifts. One of the Marys, this one the sister of Martha and Lazarus, dumped one year’s worth of wages in the form of perfume on his head just days before his trial, death, and burial. (Hard to wrap your mind around that one? Yeah, for me too, until I thought of my favorite fragrance and the cost of the perfume: 1 ounce, tax included, is $350, US).

Who was Jesus to these people? I imagine He mentored those in business, if only because they listened and took to heart some of His parables. He accepted women as equal to men, a foreign concept back then and, sad to say, somewhat the same today. He healed, He loved, He blessed, He teased, He wiped away tears, He accepted gifts, whatever the person was able to give.

Each of those people could only fathom one small slice of Him because of their humanness, their imperfection. So, too, with us. If one of us needs healing, we see Him as a healer and preach that message. If one of us needs someone who will comfort as we grieve over loss or terrible hurts that have been done to us, we see Him as comforter. If one of us needs to make sense of something, perhaps how to make a situation work without our infernal temper getting in the way, we see Him as mentor and guide. And if we need a place of worship that sings a lot, we go to that kind of church. If we need an hour of solid teaching at each gathering, we go there. If we need the richness of symbolism, we go there. If we need to make sure there are good programs for our children, we go there.

In each case, when we receive what we need, we will speak of the goodness of God from our perspective and all of it only serves to prove how big, how awesome He is. He can and is able to reach each of us in the manner we need most, whatever that manner might be. He is Lord; He is Savior; and we worship Him the best we can and I, for one, rejoice in the variegated message of His love and grace.

All of Heaven’s best to you and yours,
Margret

Monday Morning Memo: The Cure for What Ails Ya  My morning Bible reading has taken me from the Psalms into the Proverbs. Haven’t been there for ... Read More

My morning Bible reading has taken me from the Psalms into the Proverbs. Haven’t been there for a while, I’m sorry to say. Oh, I’ve read verses from time to time, or looked for something that would show me I’m either on the right path or how to return to it. But reading a chapter a day and savoring just that? Not so much. So I’m enjoying the request to remain until given permission to move on, pondering different verses for different situations in life.

Did you know there’s a proverb suitable for nearly any and every occasion? So did I, and yet it feels as though I’ve not read these things before. It’s one of the things I love most about the Word of God: everything is familiar yet new. Rather like sharing a meal prepared in someone else’s kitchen. Your friend might well use the same ingredients you do, yet the delicious results are not the same as yours. Or how about this? Getting to know more about the Divine by enjoying a worship service in a different gathering place and reading new-to-you blogs. You know to the core of your being Daddy God loves you, and you have a wonderful relationship together. You are also confident this other person knows and loves Him too, yet to hear or read of Him from their perspective opens up an entirely different view, almost a panoramic vista you didn’t know existed.

I’m also enjoying one of those new-to-me blogs and am joyfully fascinated and intrigued by what I read. Six years ago, this Quaker preacher wrote something and refused to elaborate because she thought it’d be fun to have people guess what she was referencing: “I don’t know what they are putting in gasoline these days
but it sure doesn’t taste as good as it used to.” Me? I thought she spoke of having to siphon gas if she’d run out of fuel.

That’s how the Proverbs are for me now; offering choice little nuggets sprinkled singly in each chapter, helping me understand how to be a better wife and/or friend, also how to navigate through my days of work and responsibility. I’m going to share a few with you, all from the New International Version 1984, since that’s where I spend these mornings, and would love to hear why you think they’re important to me. Ready?

He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God. He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward him for what he has done. ~ Proverbs 14:31; 19:17

Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. ~ Proverbs 15:22

From the fruit of his mouth a man’s stomach is filled; with the harvest from his lips he is satisfied. ~ Proverbs 18:20

The purposes of a man’s heart are deep waters, but a man of understanding draws them out.

A man’s steps are directed by the LORD. How then can anyone understand his own way? ~ Proverbs 20:5,24

The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD; he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases. All a man’s ways seem right to him, but the LORD weighs the heart. ~ Proverbs 21:1-2

Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach, for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your lips. So that your trust may be in the LORD, I teach you today, even you. Have I not written thirty sayings for you, sayings of counsel and knowledge, teaching you true and reliable words, so that you can give sound answers to him who sent you? ~ Proverbs 22:17-21

Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. If you say, “But we knew nothing about this,” does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards your life know it? Will he not repay each person according to what he has done? ~ Proverbs 24:11-12

Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of one’s friend springs from his earnest counsel. ~ Proverbs 27:9

What do you think? Do you want to play that game with me? Would be fun, wouldn’t it? Like going to an improv show. Whether you do or not, allow yourself to be intrigued by the wonder of the One who is especially fond of you (and you and you) and loves fellowshipping with you.

All of Heaven’s best to you and yours,
Margret

For a long time I’ve been a proponent of being real. Know what that means? In some ways, it means being completely and utterly yourself so no matter where you are or who you’re with those around you have some idea of what to expect. Not predictability, not sameness and boredom with no life or spontaneity; rather, stability.

There are different layers of being real, each based upon the situation you’re in. With the way these interactions occur, one might think you need to be a different person with each. Not really. There’s only the need to remember what’s appropriate in each situation.

There’s a level of professionalism found while in work mode with a client. Even if you get along well enough to share a few laughs, somehow you never forget you’ll also be seeing them across the table in a conference room and they’ll be giving you direction on a project you’re doing for them.

Another part of your life may have you spending time with fellow workers outside the shop or office, yet you don’t completely let down your hair because they might not view you as professionally come Monday morning.

There’s another level for siblings, those who watched you grow up and, if they’re not as caring as family members ought to be, can use some of that information to cause you harm.

There’s yet another level for those who care about you utterly, completely, and without reserve. If you’re married, hopefully your spouse is in that category. Heart friends definitely are. These are the most precious of all relationships. They’re the ones where you can be utterly completely you, no matter what’s going on, and know you’ll be cared for and accepted. You’re “home.”

On those extremely rare occasions, when things are just too much, and it seems like you’ve been stressed for altogether too long, what feels like several-years-at-a-stretch long, “home” is where you go when you know that volcano is going to blow. Why? Because after the boom and the air has cleared, you know these precious ones are still there, loving you as they always have and always will, which is not a sure thing with the others in your life. These ones consider it an honor, a privilege, that you can let go in this way, that you’re willing to share this most powerful experience with them. And, because you love them just as fiercely, you’ll never take advantage of their caring. You will not use their acceptance as a way to excuse lack of self-control. No, indeed. Instead, you’ll also give them the benefit, the privilege of seeing how you mature and grow through life so the things that used to send you over the edge don’t faze you anymore.

Dear ones, it is my earnest prayer that each of you have loved ones who will offer the safety to explode. Of such relationships are healing and wholeness born.

All of Heaven’s best to you and yours,
Margret

Choices: the ability and the right to make them is an inviolate right, granted us by the God of Heaven Himself. How do I know that? Because He doesn’t force any of us to do anything against our will. Yes, He recommends; yes, He teaches and guides and instructs; yes, He will give advice when asked. But He doesn’t demand we do things His way.

It’s something many of us have trouble wrapping our minds around. If one knows the best way to do things, shouldn’t there be an insistence to follow that course? If going a certain direction — or refraining from going another — causes challenges and difficulties, shouldn’t another course be obligatory?

Not according to our Heavenly Father, nor to the Holy Spirit. They give direction but it is ours to follow it…or not. Why is that? Because it’s meant to be an interactive involvement; a close, voluntary relationship. There’s no power struggle. Other than the sheer stupidity of trying to one-up God, that doesn’t result in close, loving communion.

Such a relationship also allows for mistakes to be made, yet there’s always opportunity for recovery, for a fine-tuning of the course, even if it means retracing a few steps.

The best example of this I can find is my experience on my husband’s smart phone. During the six weeks after we moved down from the mountain and before we found/moved into this duplex, we shared a home with best friends and, of necessity, did things quite differently. For example, while I’m an earlier riser (often up before anyone else) I couldn’t jump on the computer and write, or check in with friends, or balance my checkbook, or anything. For those six weeks that rented bedroom, as big as it was, was library, office, bedroom, and living room (when we wanted to watch something other than our friends were enjoying). And for each of those 45 days, rather than toss and turn in the darkness while others slept, I grabbed my Bible and my husband’s smart phone, and stepped into the family room where I enjoyed quiet time with the Lord, morning coffee…and…games.

Actually, I checked the day’s weather, monitored traffic patterns and mishaps for my husband’s commute and, after all that, opened his phone’s version of Solitaire. I’m a sucker for that game, playing with cards as a child and young adult, then delighting in the online version when I got my first home computer. Friends will even tell you that I play the game when they call to talk with me. It may seem rude but in actuality it helps me concentrate on the subject at hand, even helps me focus on needs. I only quit playing when we pray together, because nothing gets in the way of my/our conversation with the Divine.

So, as I sat in that family room before the sun greeted the horizon I perfected my skill, joggled and jiggled my mind awake, and just plain enjoyed myself. At the same time, I discovered an interesting thing about this version of the game: it allowed, even recommended, that a person return a card to the rows in progress if that brought more cards into the game. Rather than detracting points or saying such was an illegal move, it rewarded the decision to back up, to take a detour, if it meant odds of winning were increased. As I considered this I thought, How like God is that? We go along to the best of our ability, trying our best to listen to that voice described by Isaiah:

And thine eares shall heare a word behinde thee, saying; This is the way, walke ye in it, when ye turne to the right hand, and when ye turne to the left. ~ Isaiah 30:21, The Holy Bible 1611 Edition, King James Bible

You will hear a voice behind you saying, “This is the way. Follow it, whether it turns to the right or to the left.” ~ Isaiah 30:21, God’s Word Translation

Still, there are times when we might get it wrong, not quite interpreting the instructions clearly, or only hearing a partial answer. Sometimes choices are not always clear. Sometimes we need to take the best we could think of and give it to God, for Him to make of it an even better situation. (In the context of this particular game, the 4 of Hearts needs to be returned to the 5 of Clubs so the 3 of Clubs can move and more cards can be played.) God doesn’t scold us for this. Rather, He says, “Good job! You did the best you could based on what you understood or heard! Now, how about trying this? Go back to that juncture, and go that way instead.” Thus encouraged, we proceed — yes, proceed, not retreat — assimilating new information and, remembering we’re not God thus cannot see what the future holds, we incorporate this lesson the next time we’re at a crossroads.

So, dear ones, let’s rejoice at what we hear; let’s be thankful for our ever-involved God; and let’s never forget that, in the end, we win!

All of Heaven’s best to you and yours,

Margret

Monday Morning Memo: (Being Hurt) Are We Listening to Lies?  Four weeks ago my post was “Love, Perfected.” Remember? It told the story of the three little ... Read More

Four weeks ago my post was “Love, Perfected.” Remember? It told the story of the three little blessings we found in our backyard the day we moved in, 36-hour-old kittens abandoned by their mother who was too afraid to come back and get/care for them. Because of an autoimmune disease, I have feared many things wanting to neither exacerbate the condition nor deal with the weeks and months of pain that follow any incident. So, yes, I was frightened about what might happen because of these gorgeous babies’ needle-sharp claws. Yet I knew two things: (1) we are all called to care for those who are in our sphere of influence whether we invite them or they are placed there, and (2) justifiable or not, if I gave in to that fear I would live a decreasingly useful life, eventually unable to do even a portion of what God wanted me to accomplish.

Thus, we have growing kittens, being fed, nurtured, played with, and guided, as they grow and mature. And it feels great, just as I knew it would, except…except…at one point, one of them was walking across my legs and he ended up on the floor because he couldn’t quite keep his balance even though he tried digging into my leg for purchase. On this particular evening I was sitting on the couch, legs stretched out with ankles crossed on the green chest we use sometimes as coffee table, other times as hassock. Matt sat on the opposite end and the kitties were playing around us, between us and on the green chest.

At one point, one of them was walking across my legs (this one on top) and he ended up on the floor because he couldn’t quite keep his balance even though he tried digging into my leg for purchase. The pain was horrendous, even more so than the same type of oops a week later when one of the kitties tumbled off my arm in her zeal to get to her lunch. Why so different? Because my arm isn’t afflicted by the psoriasis and this part of my leg obviously is. Oh, how I cried.

So, what’s all this have to do with listening to lies? The enemy tried to thrust something into my mind while I was applying Neosporin and distracted by the fresh onslaught of agony: “Look what happens when you trust, when you care. And this was an accident, brought on by someone who loves you unconditionally. Think how much worse you could be hurt by others, some who have ulterior motives, some who don’t love you no matter what, some who are only looking for what they can get from you. Is it really worth it to love? Wouldn’t it be better to live life insulated and removed from others? Why worry about them? Why care? Why put yourself out there when you know how much it will hurt?”

Oh, yeah, that sneaky old devil. He was right, though: caring about others can be painful. We will be hurt because that happens when imperfect people interact with others who are equally imperfect. But he was also wrong, oh so wrong: Love is the only way to go, the only life to live. For when we love we are fully engaged, we are emulating the One who loves us without wanting anything in return but relationship, Who cares about us even when we screw up, Who applauds all we do and holds us when things don’t go as we hoped they would.

Someday, some (maybe all) these little ones will move on to their permanent homes and because we raised them well, applauding their growth, caring for them, encouraging them and training them, they will be good fits in their new families, happy with their new people and their new people will be thrilled with them as well.

Someday we, too, will be in our forever homes and finally get to meet the One who not only died and was raised so we could be there, but Who also daily lives in us, sharing this life, celebrating our victories, encouraging us as we learn our lessons.

Yes, by all means, every chance you get, always say “yes” to love: it is worth anything and everything.
All of Heaven’s best to you and yours,

Margret

Monday Morning Memo: Praying for Leadership  Dear ones, This is an election year in the country where I live, so I hear much of ... Read More

Dear ones,

This is an election year in the country where I live, so I hear much of what this or that candidate might be able to offer me, the average citizen. While I listen to these things, and weigh them on the scale of God’s law of love, I find myself grieved by all the hate and anger spewing from all proponents.

At the same time, I think of this country where I live and compare it to other countries throughout the world. For some of us, ou systems of government allow us to choose whom we want for leader by means of a democratic vote. For others of us, we’re ruled by parliaments (we can vote for those representatives) as well as kings and queens (whom we cannot vote for). Still others of us live in lands where we have no say and, sadly, in some of those lands the idea that people should be treated with respect is an absolutely foreign concept.

Each locale, each culture, has its own challenges, though some are much more difficult than others are. In each case, however, the Word of God applies, for He wrote to all who are sons of Adam and daughters of Eve, explaining how He views things, what’s important to Him, and how He would like us to conduct ourselves under the authority of the land in which we live.

In my land, there are people who run for office: nationally, statewide, or locally. Decades past, opponents were simply those who held a different view, who believed our country (or state or locale) could be made better by doing something opposite to what another recommended. This past decade, however, I’m saddened to report that it’s gone from “My opponent across the aisle believes this and I don’t” to voters actively involved in their party’s agenda saying of the opponent, “I hate him.” Along with that hate is the decision to make (and forward) disparaging comments about said challenger, with the result that no longer is any child of God, created on purpose by Him, treated with respect. And that breaks my heart. It also breaks the heart of God:

Rejoice not when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles or is overthrown, Lest the Lord see it and it be evil in His eyes and displease Him, and He turn away His wrath from him [to expend it upon you, the worse offender]. ~ Proverbs 24:17-18, Amplified Bible

Compared to what many of you in other countries experience, this sort of thing may seem to be no big deal, and I understand your feeling that way. However, I beg to differ. It *is* a big deal, because every person should be treated with respect if for no other reason than he/she is here, therefore God (who makes no mistakes) called them into being. Therefore, I ask that each of us do our best to live by the Law of Love. My prayer is that each of us would see immediate results in their lives here. Unfortunately, that may not happen, but this I can guarantee: your rewards in Heaven will be great.

All of Heaven’s best to you and yours,

Margret

Trip Lee To Release “The Good Life” Book!  News Source: Rogers & Cowan Billboard chart-topping hip hop artist...

News Source: Rogers & Cowan

Billboard chart-topping hip hop artist Trip Lee is gearing up for the release of his debut book, The Good Life.  A continuation to his latest album which released on April 10, 2012 through Reach Records, The Good Lifewill hit stores nationwide on October 1, 2012 through Moody Publishers.

“For years, I’ve been doing music that challenges our world views and points to Christ – but there have always been limitations to music, because there’s only so much you can communicate in a song,” says Trip. “The album gave listeners snapshots of the good life, and the book will be more like a manual on how to live it. I’m praying that this book will help the reader to turn away from lies and live the way we were created to live.”

By using personal testimonials of his own life, Trip explores the lies that have been told, and paints a new, biblical picture of the good life. Exploring all of life including happiness, success, and morality in light of God’s truth The Good Life redefines the term as not living to please yourself but living by faith in a good God.

“The good life is not climbing to the top of the corporate ladder, the good life is not a life free from any responsibility,” says Trip. “The good life is living in sync with God and embracing all that He has to offer us in Christ.”

No newcomer to the Christian music scene, Trip’s debut album, If They Only Knew, hit stores nationwide a few days after his high school graduation.  That same year, he was also featured on the Dove Award-nominated, timeless classic “Jesus Muzik” with label mate Lecrae. Trip’s sophomore album, 20/20, was released in 2008 and garnered much success: breaking into the Billboard Top 200, reaching #11 on the Billboard Christian albums chart and landing at #4 on the Gospel chart. With his third studio album, Between Two Worlds, Trip offered a collection of reflections on life in a fallen world.  Those reflections resonated with listeners as B2W debuted at #1 on the Christian and Gospel Billboard charts, #5 on the Hip Hop/Rap iTunes chart and #9 on the Top Albums iTunes chart. The album also received two Dove nominations and a Stellar Award for Best Gospel Rap/Hip Hop Album of the Year.

Trip’s latest album release, The Good Life debuted at #2 both on the overall and Hip Hop iTunes charts while garnering the #3 position on Billboard’s Hip Hop chart, landing at #17 on the Top 200 Billboard chart and taking the #1 slot on the Christian and Gospel Billboard chart.

Trip has traveled the world performing for thousands of listeners. In conjunction withThe Good Life, Trip is currently on a promotional nationwide tour and will be a featured artist at various 2012 festivals including Spirit West Coast, Atlanta Fest and Rock The Lakes, among others.

As for the theme of this song: God is very much real as well as alive weather we acknowledge that or not. Science didn’t create itself, neither did humans create themselves. Global music rights leader Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) held its annual Film/TV Awards tonight at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. The ceremony saluted the composers of music featured in the past year’s top-grossing films, top-rated primetime network television series, and highest-ranking cable network programs.

Rolfe Kent received BMI’s Richard Kirk Award, which is bestowed on composers who have made significant contributions to the realm of film and television music.

Kent also took home two BMI Film/TV crystals for his work on Mr. Popper’s Penguins and Dexter. The evening’s other honorees included Mark Mothersbaugh (21 Jump Street, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked), John Williams (The Adventures of Tintin, War Horse), Michael Andrews (Bad Teacher, Bridesmaids), Thomas Newman (The Help), Cliff Martinez (Contagion), Mychael Danna (Moneyball), Christopher Lennertz (Horrible Bosses), Aaron Zigman (Madea’s Big Happy Family), Mike Post (Rob), Will Jennings (American Idol), Charlie Clouser (American Horror Story), David Buckley (PRS) (The Good Wife) and Brian Tyler (Hawaii Five-0, Terra Nova). BMI also celebrated Ludovic Bource’s (SACEM) Academy Award win for The Artist.

Clinton, Harry Gregson-Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Michael Kamen, Mark Mothersbaugh, Danny Elfman, Alan Menken, Mike Post, Lalo Schifrin, John Barry, Charlie Fox and John Williams.

Rolfe Kent has succeeded in creating a body of work that is fiercely original, musically complex and artistically bold, all in the service of the films and television for which it is composed. His diverse list of credits spans intellectual comedy to slapstick, white-knuckle thrillers to drama. Kent has scored almost 50 films, including the Academy Award-nominated Up in the Air, for which he won a Golden Satellite Award; Sideways, which earned Kent a Golden Globe nomination and Critics’ Choice Award in 2007; Mr. Popper’s Penguins, Young Adult, Charlie St. Cloud, About Schmidt, Election, Mean Girls, Legally Blonde and Legally Blonde II, Wedding Crashers, The Matador, Reign Over Me, The Hunting Party, The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Thank You for Smoking and most recently Michael Hoffman’s Gambit, written by the Coen Brothers and slated for release in January 2013. In television, Kent also composed the Emmy-nominated main title theme for Showtime’s runaway hit Dexter. An in-demand collaborator, he has established strong working relationships with top-tier directors such as Richard Shepherd, Alexander Payne, Mark Waters, Jason Reitman, and Burr Steers. Kent has received an impressive 13 BMI Film & Television Awards since 2002.

News: Carole King Named BMI Icon at 60th Annual BMI Pop Awards

Global music rights leader Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) honored the songwriters and music publishers behind the year’s most-performed songs on Tuesday, May 15 at the organization’s 60th annual Pop Awards, held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Carole King received the BMI Icon Award recognizing the “unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers” she has made through her incomparable catalog as a songwriter and recording artist.

Ester Dean, Benny Blanco and Pitbull all earned the coveted BMI Pop Songwriter of the Year title. Dean, Blanco and Pitbull each contributed five songs to the year’s most performed list. Dean composed “What’s My Name?,” “Rude Boy,” “S&M,” “Super Bass” and “Firework”; Blanco wrote “Blow,” “Please Don’t Go,” “Teenage Dream,” “We R Who We R” and “Dynamite”; and Pitbull penned “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love,” “Give Me Everything,” “Hey Baby (Drop It to the Floor),” “I Like It” and “On the Floor.”

Dean enjoyed an especially big night, as “Firework” clinched BMI Pop Song of the Year honors for her and co-writer Sandy Vee, as well as publishers Dat Damn Dean Music and peermusic III, Ltd.

With 10 songs among the year’s most-performed, Universal Music Publishing Group claimed the prestigious BMI Pop Publisher of the Year crystal.

The all-star tribute to King featured promising young talent, an international star, and a golden-age pop idol, reflecting the broad appeal of King’s extraordinary work. 19 Recordings/Interscope Records recording artist and American Idol alumna Haley Reinhart delivered an inspiring performance of “Beautiful”; Universal Republic recording artist Colbie Caillat offered a soulful rendition of “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”; and Peter Noone of Herman’s Hermits capped off the tribute with “I’m into Something Good,” the debut smash for Herman’s Hermits in 1964.

As a BMI Icon, King joins an elite list that includes David Foster, John Fogerty, Kris Kristofferson, the Jacksons, the Bee Gees, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Paul Simon, Merle Haggard, Brian Wilson, Willie Nelson, James Brown, Carlos Santana, Dolly Parton, and others.

King was born in Brooklyn, and her songwriting career ignited nearby in Manhattan with Don Kirshner's Aldon Music in the early 60s. With writing partner and then-husband Gerry Goffin, King topped charts with the Shirelles’ “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” then Bobby Vee’s “Take Good Care of My Baby.” A flood of hits followed: Little Eva’s “Loco-Motion,” the Chiffons’ “One Fine Day,” the Monkees’ “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” the Drifters’ “Up on the Roof,” Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” the Crystals’ “He Hit Me (And it Felt Like a Kiss)” and more. When she released her own album Tapestry in 1971, breathtaking songs such as “So Far Away,” “It’s Too Late,” “I Feel the Earth Move” and “You’ve Got a Friend” (also recorded by close friend James Taylor) propelled King to four Grammy wins and fueled the album’s six-year stay on the charts. King became a superstar, and Tapestry became the biggest-selling album of the era. To date, more than 400 of King’s timeless compositions have been recorded by more than 1000 artists, resulting in 100 hit singles, many reaching No. 1. She has won 31 BMI songwriting awards spanning pop, r&b and country categories, and 18 of her compositions have earned more than one million performances. King is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The 60th annual BMI Pop Awards were hosted by BMI President & CEO Del Bryant, along with Barbara Cane, BMI Vice President/General Manager, Los Angeles, and Phil Graham, BMI Senior Vice President, Writer/Publisher Relations.

MusicWorld: Why Adele and Her Songwriting Will Always Matter

Paparazzi flock to the famous. It comes with the territory of globe-spanning celebrity. But Adele Laurie Blue Adkins — arguably the biggest pop artist in the world right now — also draws attention of a much rarer sort. Respected media outlets from 60 Minutes to Vogue, Rolling Stone, The Wall Street Journal and National Public Radio have devoted precious airtime and space to monitoring the health of her vocal chords, or scientifically analyzing her songs’ emotional impact, or trying to establish who the poor excuse for an ex-boyfriend was that inspired them.

That these are matters of mainstream concern proves Adele’s impact can’t possibly be quantified in terms of her ubiquitous hits, phenomenal sales (the most of any act last year) and awards (Album of the Year at both the 2012 BRIT Awards in her native England and the 2012 Grammys). There’s more to it than that. People have a deep investment in her music; a personal stake in things that have affected her life and what she’s made of them artistically.

During the February 12 edition of 60 Minutes, Adele confessed to Anderson Cooper, “I find it quite difficult to think that there’s, you know, like, 20 million people listening to my album that I wrote very selfishly to get over a breakup. I didn’t write it being like ‘This is going to be a hit.’”

Cooper echoed her statement for emphasis: “You really wrote it to help you get over something.”

“Yeah,” she replied. “So the fact that so many people are interested in that, and want to cry to it or want to feel strong to it, or whatever, I find really, it’s like little old me.” Adele’s self-deprecation is part of what makes her so likeable. But, in reality, it’s the pieces of little old her she puts into her songs that have made 20 million people respond to her albums. As pop critic Ann Powers put it in an end-of-2011 music discussion in the online magazine Slate, “Singers like Adele make ‘ordinary’ pro¬found. Little details matter in their songs.”

Adele has said that each of her albums — 2008’s 19 and 2011’s 21 — were written and recorded in the wake of a wrenching breakup. On 21, for instance, she devotes all 11 songs to telling her side of the story, in the process capturing the way small moments can feel desperately big at the time. You hear her taking up for herself when she’s been hurt one too many times (“Turning Tables”), confronting the still-burning heat of her pas¬sion (“Set Fire to the Rain”) and mourning the once-and-for-all end of the relationship (“Someone Like You”).

Emotional catharsis can be an unruly thing, but Adele expresses her pain in ways that resonate with listeners the world over who’ve been there, too. Said Fraser T. Smith, who produced “Set Fire to the Rain” and co-wrote the song with her, “I could lie and say that we had a master plan with this, but the truth is that she’s able to perfectly capture that raw emotion in a way that’s both relatable and original.”

Take the song’s central image. Many an entry in the pop songbook has used rain as a symbol of melancholy and fire as a symbol of primal, all-consuming feeling. But Adele combined the two familiar images into one that pushes into more dramatic territory; she’s defying nature by sheer force of will, lighting the very rain on fire.

“She sets the bar incredibly high when it comes to lyrics,” said Smith, “so we went backwards and forwards until each line felt as good as it could. She drove most of the words, and [I’m still struck by] how she can deliver lines which are pretty simple yet contain such amazing imagery.”

Adele told Vogue’s Jonathan Van Meter, “I have no idea where it comes from. I don’t read literature. I don’t have a very big capacity for language and words. I’m quite limited when it comes to just chatting. But my head comes alive when I’m writing music, and I start using words and describing emotions I had no idea existed in me.”

Even though her song ideas originate as self-expression, she’s seen what they do to other people when she performs them. She related to Van Meter, “When I sing ‘Someone Like You,’ I know that every single person in the room will be able to relate to it. That’s where that emotional connection comes from. I have sympathy for myself, I have sympathy for them, they have sympathy for me, and I know that we are all there knowing exactly how each other feels.”

The ages of the listeners hardly seem to matter. Adele’s not limited to an audience of her twenty-something peers, although plenty of them do seem to love her music.

The fact that she titled her first two albums with the ages she was when she made them means those collections of songs will forever seem linked with her young adulthood. But her ability to talk about the experience of love from a myriad angles, her evident comfort in her own skin and her freedom from the rapid turnover of trends (though many people initially associated her with the retro-soul fad, she’s since proven that she stands on her own) also connect her with mature, fully formed pop performers like Sade, whom she’s cited as an influence, and Bonnie Raitt, whose hit ballad “I Can’t Make You Love Me” she’s covered. After one of Adele’s trips down front to collect a Grammy trophy, Raitt was shown beaming by a camera panning over the crowd.

Earlier that same night, Adele gave what was really her first performance since her vocal chord surgery, a show-stopping rendition of “Rolling in the Deep” buoyed by a full band and four female backing singers. Not that she needs a lush production to get her songs across. “Rolling in the Deep” and a couple of her other biggies, “Someone Like You” and “Chasing Pavements,” worked perfectly well with just her voice and minimal keyboard and guitar accompaniment when she played a Tiny Desk Concert for NPR last year. With the songs laid bare, you could tell beyond the shadow of a doubt there’s something there for the listener to latch onto.

MusicWorld: Tom T. Hall: How the Storyteller Found His Voice

Tom T. Hall was a Roanoke disc jockey the day his phone rang with an offer from Newkeys Publishing to come to Nashville and be a professional songwriter.

“They asked, ‘Can you live on $50 a week?’ I said, ‘It’s worked so far,’” says Hall, whose singular songs earned him the nickname “The Storyteller” as well as a spot in the Country Music Hall of Fame.

That offer came in 1963, and on Jan. 1, 1964, he rolled into Music City with a guitar, a G.I. haircut and a work ethic that found him up each morning to bang out song lyrics on a typewriter. He wrote hundreds of songs, some sad and some funny, and many tending towards lovelorn. But he didn’t write a Tom T. Hall song until the day he quit making things up.

“I ran into Stonewall Jackson (the country singer, not the Confederate general) one day, and he was working on a prison album . . . you know, songs about prisoners,” Hall said. “He asked me to write him a prison song, and I told him I’d see what I could do. I tried several approaches to the prison songs, and they didn’t work. I told my wife, Miss Dixie, that I’d never been in prison and that I felt phony trying to write about it. And she said, ‘Well, you’ve been in jail, write about that.’”

Hall sat down and wrote a song the way someone else might begin a barroom story: “One time I spent a week inside a little country jail,” he began. “And I don’t guess I’ll ever live it down.” He went on to relate the whole of his experience: The crowded cell, the nonplussed sheriff (“That part about me being who I was did not impress him”) and the jailor’s flirty, homely wife who seemed prettier each day of Hall’s confinement.

It was nothing like what Stonewall had wanted, and Hall never even presented the song to Jackson. He did show it to producer Jerry Kennedy, though, who determined that “A Week in a Country Jail” was unlikely to be recorded by another artist because it was uncon¬ventional (no chorus) and atypical. But Kennedy pushed Hall to record it himself, and when the song was released in 1969, it became Hall’s first No. 1 country song.

“It freed my mind up,” Hall said. “It made me think that maybe I could make it without having to write songs that were just like writers I looked up to, like Harlan Howard, or Bill Anderson, or Buck Owens. I started writing a lot of songs that just started up and kept rambling. I started writing biographically, and I was breaking all kind of rules. Like in ‘Homecoming’ (a Top 10 hit in 1969), the word ‘Homecoming’ isn’t even in the song.”

No longer in the replication business, Hall penned songs that were as dagger-sharp as Raymond Carver short stories, songs written in an educated-yet-unadorned style that, along with the works of Kris Kristofferson, John Hartford and Mickey Newbury, helped alter and elevate the language of country music.

Hall sometimes says his move to biographical writing was “more relating than creating,” but it was, in fact, a creation: a gently revolutionary manner of writing that introduced listeners to the people they’d never met, and to places they’d never been. His opening lines were invitations: “‘How old do you think I am?’ he said/ I said, well, I didn’t know” from “Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine”; “Tossed and turned the night before in some old motel/ Subconsciously recalling some old sinful thing I’d done,” from “Trip To Hyden”; the simple, “I remember the year that Clayton Delaney died”; or, in a smash hit he wrote for Jeannie C. Riley, “I want to tell you all a story ‘bout a Harper Valley widowed wife/Who had a teenage daughter who attended Harper Valley Junior High.”

“The best compliment I ever had, I heard from a disc jockey who played a song by somebody else and then said, ‘That sounds like a Tom T. Hall song,’” Hall says. “I thought, ‘Hey, there must be such a thing as a Tom T. Hall song.’”

There is, and you’ll know it when you hear it.

MusicWorld: At 80, John Williams Is Still Building a Legacy

As much as any composer alive, John Williams has written the musical soundtrack of our lives. Earlier this year, the five-time Academy Award winner turned 80; yet he shows no signs of slowing down.

Williams received two more Oscar nominations this year — for his scores for the Steven Spielberg films War Horse and The Adventures of Tintin — which brings his total to 47, the most of any living person (and second only to Walt Disney overall). He is currently working on the music for Spielberg’s next film, Lincoln, starring Daniel Day-Lewis as the 16th president. With a nod to the president’s Illinois expe¬riences, he plans to record the score with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Despite a track record that includes some of the most familiar movie melodies of the past several decades — Jaws, Star Wars, Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Harry Potter and more — Williams has no intention of retiring or resting on his considerable laurels. There is always another assignment just around the corner.

For the past six years, apart from his concert work and the occasional TV assignment, he has worked exclusively for Spielberg (on such films as Munich, the fourth Indiana Jones film and the two recent Oscar nominees), his filmmaking partner since The Sugarland Express nearly 40 years ago.

“We’ve never really had an argument,” Williams says in a comfortable studio at Amblin, Spielberg’s Universal City complex where the composer works. “The variety of things that he’s asked me to do — all ends of the musical spectrum — has given me continued, and always renewed, interest. It’s never the same.”

The last two films offer a perfect example: War Horse, a drama that begins in Dartmoor, England, just before the outbreak of World War I; and Tintin, an animated romp based on the famous Belgian comic strip about a young reporter and his spunky dog. “They really couldn’t be more different,” Williams says. For War Horse, Williams drew inspiration from early 20th-century composers working in the English pastoral style; for Tintin, he paid homage to the cartoon composers he recalled from his youth and “the virtuosity of the playing of the orchestras” in that earlier era, which he attempted to duplicate with more than 90 top-flight Hollywood musicians.

After completing Lincoln, Williams will shift his focus to live performances this summer with the Boston Pops, for which he is Laureate Conductor. He served from 1980 to 1993 as its music director and, he says, “After 30-plus years with the orchestra, it’s like a family, with a new generation. It’s a huge part of my musical life.” He will also make his annual end-of-sum¬mer stop at the Hollywood Bowl, conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Over more than half a century of writing music for films, TV, special events (such as the Olympics) and the concert hall, are there a handful of memorable moments?

“The first time I saw Jaws,” Williams recalls, “I was alone in the room, having no idea what to expect. I remember the impression to this day of what a magnificently engineered piece of work that was, with the boats, the water, the weather and the tension that was created.”

He also cites favorite collaborations with violinist Itzhak Perlman and cellist Yo-Yo Ma, especially on Memoirs of a Geisha, and “so many great moments on the podium with orchestras in L.A. and London — all those Star Wars films, Superman, Harry Potter . . . great friends and great players.”

Despite his public profile, Williams is a shy and self-effacing man who deflects ques¬tions about his legacy or how he’d like to be remembered. Instead, he talks about the future of music in America: “I would love to be here 30, 40 or 50 years from now. The students in our conservatories are so fantastically good. The best symphony orchestras in the world are in this country; that’s a great success story for us. If we can manage as brilliantly in our governance as well as I know these kids will do in music, we’re go¬ing to have a much better world and an at¬mosphere where good work is appreciated.”
